the jack
russell terrier is bred to have the courage to follow a fox to ground
and stay with it until the quarry bolts, or the terrier is dug to.
Their job is to to bay (bark) at their quarry, charge it if necessary,
and perhaps exchange bites, their job is not to kill. It is best
to go out with people that are experienced in earthwork, as many
things can happen in the field, some of them very tragic.
The ideal working terrier
hunts ahead, finding their own sette, can get along with any dog
in the field, and listens to any person out with them. They have
the structure to allow them to creep into holes and make offensive
and defensive maneuvers. For this they need to be narrowly built,
a small flexible chest, decent length of neck, and good strong teeth.
A good coat affords them protection from the elements.
